Muscles and Bones 04:32
lyrics
Say, say what you want to sayI'm leaving you anyway. It's time for the truth. And be as cruel as you need to beI probably had it coming to meYou know I gave it to you.Out on the sea where the wind makes deliriousThe sailors far from their homesI'd like to be in a place so mysteriousFree from my muscles and bones!Free from my muscles and bones!Do, do what you've always wanted to doThough I wouldn't let you. You're mine no more. And I am not yours.I'm just breeze floating through the whitecapsSkipping through the waves.Out on the sea where the wind makes deliriousThe sailors far from their homesI'd like to be in a place so mysteriousFree from my muscles and bones!Free from my muscles and bones! One drop of water to a castawayis worth more than a castle to a king.I have been lost and I'm thirstyAnd my hands are trembling.Little means anything.[3:09: #trumpet and banjo solo!]Out on the sea where the wind makes deliriousThe sailors from their homesI'd like to be in a place so mysteriousFree from my muscles and bones.Free from my muscles and bones!Free from my muscles and bones!

lyrics
This ain't working! I'm just pulling strings.I'm living in a fantasy land, and all this amounts to nothing. And I feel so low that you don't know my name.Baby bring me some water, and I'll chop up all your wood.I need your love more than a grown man should, And I feel so low that you don't know my name. All those late nights gigging, all those miles of roadAll those crates of rigging, all those lonesome loadsAll those sad love songs when I know you ain't gonna listenBut there ain't no shade on a Saturday night--Y'all just what some rhythm!Got a brand new track but I already know mamma loves what I do now,And the truth be told is I write every song for youThat's why I feel so low that you don't know my name.Darling if you only knew the heartache your love puts me through.I fall in love with every song, then I recall we don't belong, and II feel so low that you don't know my name. All those late nights gigging, all those miles of roadAll those crates of rigging, all those lonesome loadsAll those sad love songs when I know you ain't gonna listenBut there ain't no shade on a Saturday night--Y'all just what some rhythm!Got a brand new track but I already know mamma loves what I do now,And the truth be told is I write every song for youThat's why I feel so low that you don't know my name.I feel so low that you don't know my name.I feel so low that you don't know my name.

Jesus, It's Smoky 02:47
lyrics
Jesus, it's smoky.Guess the hell fires are burning again.Do I work tomorrow, or is this the end?Can I have one more round?I know I seem low keyBut I've had bigger flames that I didn't tend,And until the devil's taken all my friendsI'm sitting back down. But I still thank you Godfor the good man that you are and all the really, really good stuff you've doneAnd I know that don't meanThat you won't send me off to hell.We both know I've been no loyal son.I still thank you for this beer.Tastes even better when the end is near.Jesus, it's smoky. Now I don't mean to be low keyBut I get tired of getting kicked aroundSo I stopped by your place downtownWhere they asked for my soul.I said, “You don't even know me!”And I ain't got nothin' lost to be found!I just wanna know what makes the flames go down,Then I gotta roll!"But I still thank you GodFor the good man that you areand all the really, really good stuff you've doneAnd I know that don't meanThat you won't send me straight to hellFor this song and having way too much fun.I still thank you for this beer, Though it's the last one I fear.Jesus, it's smoky.

The Firing Line 03:25
lyrics
The all closed their eyes and they waited their turnsThen emptied their minds of their final concerns."Dear savior, dear savior, whomever you are,I ask for your mercy on this evening."But no mercy was given, the judgements were cast.An offer was issued, one after the last."I'll show you such mercy if you promise meabsolute vengeance and full loyalty!"The offers considered, not all did the same.To some it seemed righteous to act in his nameTo fight for a prophet who'd spare their own soulSeemed perfectly fair, so they marched to their goal. But to others they noticed their lives flashing byFor the love that they felt they knew doomed them to die,Because in their very families the righteous were fewAnd thus it was clear what this deal would do!Dear savior, dear savior, whomever you are,I ask for your mercy on this evening. So quiet they stood, accepting their fates.Aware that their headstones would honor this date,For they knew not a savior who would ask in his nameTo tear up our bonds and have us all be the same. And so surely they all met their maker that day,But he wan't the same guy who put them away,And blissful were those who did not cross the doorAnd died for the ones who were worth dying for.Dear savior, dear savior, whomever you are,I ask for your mercy on this evening.

Life on the River 03:48
lyrics
Coming home from a rough dayI was looking for the words to sayWhen I opened the door and she jumped into my armsLike a splash of cool water. Then she asked me what was wrongI said, "The company's moving onand they won't take me andI don't know what all this is leading to."She just smiled and said thatnot all the lines run so true."Most of us meander and wind. Me and you--we can go back where we came from, let the rest drift on by."(And I know she was right--I could see it in her eyes)She's my life on the riverThe way she flows and she shimmersThe way she gives and she takes, how she rises and fallsAnd I'll love her forever. It doesn't matter what they sayIt all makes sense when I'm with herWe roll on, we roll on,Like life on the river. Now folks speedin' by every dayWe just let them go and make their wayWhile we sit on the beach, maybe float a little bitDip our toes in the eddy. There's no place we'd rather be.A life of flexibilityBut the truth is that I know I wouldn't be here without herWith my head full of steam I'd be ridin' for sureMaking promises I can't keep, with dreams I deferListenin' to the wrong voices that call on me to roam.(But she's soothes my soul and she brings me home)She's my life on the riverThe way she flows and she shimmersThe way she gives and she takes, how she rises and fallsAnd I'll love her forever. It doesn't matter what they sayIt all makes sense when I'm with herWe roll on, we roll onLike life on the river.

Corn Don't Grow 04:24
lyrics
You know the fields don't play themselvesand I ain't scared of hard work.We do your job, get a little bit of luck,We can raise a full crop on a little plot of dirt. But then you said that you were leaving. You said somehow the view had changed. How did our land of promises get so fadedSo rearranged? Now the corn don't grow so high no moreNothing like it did beforeSince you went away. No, the corn don't grow so high no moreI don't know what I stay here forAlone all dayWorking these fields like I'm living in a goddamn dreamOoooIt's not your fault for leaving.I probably would have left me, too.I'll admit right now staying put doesn't feelLike the right thing to do.This was our place of wonder! It's more than food that grows on a farm.We had a dream that got turned under,Then the weather done lost its charmNow the corn don't grow so high no moreNothing like it did beforeSince you went away. No, the corn don't grow so high no moreI don't know what I stay here forAlone all dayWorking these fields like I'm living in a goddamn dreamOoooLiving in a goddamn dreamOoooWhen I lay my body downWhat will grow from me?What will become of this farm, and our home, and our dreamAnd your memory?I guess I'm finally letting go of the hand you pulled away. This farm is disappearing--Old dreams, returned to clay. Now the corn don't grow so high no moreNothing like it did beforeSince you went away. No, the corn don't grow so high no moreI don't know what I stay here forAlone all dayWorking these fields like I'm living in a goddamn dreamOoooLiving in a goddamn dreamOoooNot living in a goddamn dream.Oooo
ABOUT THE ALBUM: This one started as an experiment: what would happen if I withdrew for a year and played and recorded every instrument myself? The result was raw, dark, and eclectic. This collection of songs--some might call them demos--represents most of what I put together in that year. In addition to the usual guitar, it has banjo, accordion, trumpet, piano, organ, upright bass, cajon, shaker, tambourine, and a shanty-like choir of bass-baritone voices. Following the love songs of Cathedral, Embers is a break-up album in all respects, both in subject matter and in style. Burn it all down! The good news? It's time to build up again.
