TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - "No Other Land," a film about Palestinian activists struggling to protect their community from destruction by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank, won the Oscar 2025 for best documentary film on Sunday local time.
The film, directed by Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Rachel Szor, and Hamdan Ballal, has not yet been distributed in the United States.
As reported by Arab News, the collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers follows activist Basel Adra, who risks arrest to document the destruction of his hometown, demolished by the Israeli army for use as a military training zone in the southern part of the West Bank.
Adra's plea went unheard until he befriended a Jewish Israeli journalist who helped strengthen his story.
"About two months ago, I became a father, and I hope my daughter won't have to live the same life I do. Always afraid of illegal settlers, violence, home demolitions, and forced displacement," said Adra.
"No Other Land" emerged as a top contender after successful showings in the film festival circuit. However, the product did not find a distributor in the United States, although it was distributed in 24 countries. For the Oscar, the film beat out "Porcelain War," "Sugarcane," "Black Box Diaries," and "Soundtrack to a Coup d'tat."
The documentary was made over four years between 2019-2023. They wrapped up production just days before Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, initiating an Israeli genocide in Gaza.
In the film, Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham joins the community fighting eviction. However, he faces rejection from Palestinians due to his privileged status as an Israeli citizen. Adra said he couldn't leave the West Bank and be treated like a criminal, while Abraham could come and go freely.
The film relies heavily on camcorder footage from Adra's personal archives. He captured Israeli soldiers bulldozing a village school and filling a water well with concrete to prevent it from being rebuilt.
The residents in the small, rocky Masafer Yatta area united after Adra filmed an Israeli soldier shooting a local man protesting the demolition of his home. The man was left paralyzed, and his mother struggled to care for him while living in a cave.
